Acer Aspire One

Acer Aspire One White

The Aspire One is a small notebook by Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Acer Incorporated. The netbook has a 8.9" CrystalBrite LED Backlit LCD screen, a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 512 GB RAM, 8 GB of flash-based solid state storage, and a 3-cell battery. The One is also available with a 2.5" 120 GB hard disk drive.

The Acer Aspire One was first released in July 2008 and is one of the most popular mini notebooks currently available, because of its comparably low price, a high-quality keyboard, a bright screen, and the good build quality.
The Linux version of the "One" comes pre-installed with the Linpus Lite Linux distribution which is based on Fedora 8. Linpus Lite offers a simplified user interface and features applications like the Mozilla Firefox Web browser and the free office package OpenOffice.org.

I just bought one of these small computers and am very impressed. There is no package management system though. A definite shortcoming.

Hi, I have a 3 dongle on my Acer 1 and along with mobile manager it works perfectly.

There some disinformations on

There some disinformations on this page !
Acer one got the 1000 mbit ethernet card
it's got two card readers, and variority of hard disk drives.
Check the specifications again !

According to the product

According to the product specs on the Acer website the 8.9" One has 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet. It is correct that there is more than one memory card slot, and that there are other options for hard drives available.
The Linux model described here comes with 8GB SSD though.

well i've just bought myself

well i've just bought myself the acer aspire one aoa150 in blue with a 120 gb hdd and 512 megs of ram. next to it in the shop was the same specc'ed one, except the fact that it had the above mentioned 8 gb ssd. the "odd" thing was, that both are same priced ! (179£ in my local curry's shop)

one thing that really annoyed me with the original LinPus lite thats preinstalled (and on the recovery disc) you cannot(!), get to the console/terminal by any easy, or me known ways. even ctrl+alt+F1-0 didnt work. i expect a linux system to give me AT LEAST the possibility to get to the console somehow.

so i installed the netbook edition of ubuntu jaunty, and i love it :D package management, terminal access, and even my hardware is (mostly) recognised. good news first, sound/mic, webcam, internal mic and usb slots work just fine, same goes for power management (at least as far as i can tell)

the only "oddity" i found is, that sd-cards and such are not instantly recognised, i found rebooting the machine with the card inserted works somehow, but kinda defies the purpose of those slots, doesn't it?

IMPORTANT: the cardslot on the left is ment to be a slot to extent hdd-capacity, somewhat, it seems only to work under the preinstalled linpus.
so to use sd-card capability u will need to insert your cards on the right hand slot

that said, i hope this review helps someone

p.s..: in lack of gigabit ethernet equipment i can neither deny/confirm the existance of said capability on my netbook. simply put, my freakin netgear router doesn't support gigabit speeds :P

Awsome. If you can re-install ubuntu then you're good to go.

On a recently purchased

On a recently purchased AOA150, one accesses the terminal by My Documents, then File on the Menu at top. Then, one should do sudo su and passwd to set root password.

then, type xfce-setting-show and you should be able to work your way down to set a right-click menu for the desktop which gives you all apps and terminals, etc.

Some people say one can

Some people say one can download using apt-get. This one does not have apt-get but does have yum which worked really well. The GUI is not real good. I even added the bc package so I can use dc the reverse Polish calculator with many digit capacity. Also, the GUI would not download Gcompris, but yum did it really well.

I recently purchased an Aspire One, 160G hd, with Windows XP home. That didn't last long. I successfully installed Linux Mint 6. Unfortunately it's one more documented sale for Windows.

Unfortunately, most of the

Unfortunately, most of the recently released netbooks are not available with Linux, forcing people like you to buy an operating system they don't wanna use. But the future looks not that bad with new Linux based netbooks from Acer, HP and a variety of netbooks equipped with ARM based processors that will run Android, Ubuntu and other Linux based systems.

I have the Acer Aspire One AOA150 netbook, 160GHD, upgrade to 1.5G RAM. I have install eeebuntu Standard 2.0 in it. It runs very well and smooth. I don't have any issue with the OS except I haven't try the built-in camera yet.

Important to note, there are

Important to note, there are many versions of this laptop, with SSD or HD, with Linux or windows (in general it seems the HD ones are with windows) and the ZG5 which is one of the few netbooks with an internal 3G modem (slot for sim is behind the battery) which for a netbook is a real bonus.

I am in the market for a more powerful model (more memory, higher resolution) but the 3G modem means this one will be used for a long time.

First thing I did was

First thing I did was installing Karmic UNR. The boot takes more than 30sec though. If they can reduce the boot time in Lucid to 15 secs or less, it would be perfect.
