never trust asus' claim
never trust asus' claim literally! when tjey say 6 hours it almost means 3-4 hours. i hv my 1000HE which claimed by asus to lie up to 9,5, but i only get 7 hours. Well asus doesnt really lie anyway. it will reach their claim if and only if : you turn on your laptop, switch off wifi, bluetooh and camera, do nothing (i mean leave it alone) and you will get as much as asus claimed.

All notebook/netbook manufacturers "lie" about battery life because they list the theoretical autonomy; that is, if the machine is on, but every component is turned down/off (wifi, Bluetooth, etc), the screen is dimmed down to minimal brightness and you don't actually do anything with it (ie. the CPU is sitting idle, no heavy hard drive activity, etc) then you could potentially get as much as they say.
Of course nobody turns on a notebook to do nothing with it/leave it idle for hours on end, but marketing-wise it sounds more impressive to say "oh yeah our model X's battery lasts 7 hours!".

One certainly cannot take the battery life specified by manufacturers for granted. Rather interpret it as a value that might theoretically be reached and then assume 60% of it for real usage scenarios.

Right. The manufacturer can't assume you're going to do any specific process. You may use Wifi, you may not... you may use other processes that decrease the battery power more, or maybe less. The only thing the manufacturers know for certain is that you're going to turn it on. It's not a 'lie', it's just a way of standardizing the measurement.
I personally think Asus lied
I personally think Asus lied their battery got not even close to 9 hours.
I have an acer aspire one and last week I tested it. I turned it on and run movies through the internet. It lasted five hours exactly.
Last week I've bought 2 asus. Yesterday I tested it the same way I tested my acer. It lasted 4 hours. I am very very very dissapointed.
It's no more a lie than a car
It's no more a lie than a car manufacturer listing horsepower ratings.
Typically, auto companies list horsepower generated before the flywheel. However, before that power gets to the ground it has to go through the transmission and push the tires, all of which take up power.
So, for example, I had a VW GTi which was rated at 180hp. However, when I did a dynamometer baseline reading of power to the wheels it comes to about 150hp (or wheel hp -- whp). Now did VW lie to me saying the GTi produces 180 hp? No, because it does produce 180hp at the crank. But after sending that power through the transmission, powering A/C, etc. I get 150whp.
Very much like battery life ratings. It's set to a standard. Asus assumes you'll do more than just turn on your machine, but because of the varying degrees of usage and the cumulative effects those processes have on the machine, actual battery life will vary wildly. It makes practical sense to standardize the battery life rating for this reason.
Similar analogies can be applied to a salary. Sure you may make 50k/year on paper, but you take home ~38k net after taxes. Still, you wouldn't tell your friends that you make 38k a year, you tell them 50k. Are you lying now too?
i get around 9-10 hours out
i get around 9-10 hours out of my asus eee 1000ha when i'm on the go. but i kill the wifi, bluetooth, webcam, dim the screen a little and put it on powersave.
