After ASUS and Acer followed other hardware manufacturers by discontinuing the production of those tiny laptops, netbooks were declared dead here and there. While their popularity has without doubt clearly decreased since the rise of tablets, I believe they will remain a niche product.

The new Samsung Chromebook seems to be a huge success. It currently ranks first on Amazon.com's laptop best seller list and is temporarily out of stock at the world's largest online retailer.

The HP Mini 1000 was first released in late 2008. HP Mobile Internet (MIE), the original Linux based operating system it shipped with, was dropped by HP long ago.

Whenever I see people tinkering with Linux like in this video, it's a confirmation that operating systems based on the Linux kernel are the most fascinating and fun to work with. Here we see Arch Linux running on a cheap 7" netbook from China, that came pre-installed with Android 2.2 and costed around €50 (~$60-$70).
