The Cr-48 Chrome notebook was the first prototype laptop designed by Google and manufactured by Inventec to run Chrome OS. The all black, completely unbranded device has a 12.1 screen is powered by an Intel Atom N455 CPU and comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD.

Initially, the Cr-48 was not available for purchase, but distributed by Google for free to about 60,000 participants of the Chrome OS Pilot Program, who in return were asked to provide feedback like suggestions for improvement and bug reports.

Apart from its minimalistic design, the Chromebook broke with some common conventions for example by replacing function keys and the infamous caps lock with shortcut keys to facilitate interaction with the Chrome operating system.

Since the announcement of the Cr-48 in late 2010 dozens of Chromebooks have been released running Chrome OS, that are far more capable in terms of processing power. So for actual usage, the Cr-48 doesn't make a lot of sense, but if you are a collector you may every now and then find an offer on eBay.
