Support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014

It's time to replace your old laptop or desktop, that is still running Windows XP with a new system. Why? Here are some compelling reasons:

  • No more software updates including security updates.
  • No protection against harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
  • Internet Explorer 6 ruins your Web experience, many sites don't work properly.
  • RAM limits: 512 MB for the Starter and 4 GB for the 32-bit Professional editions.
  • Processor limits: 1 for the Home and 2 for the Professional editions.

Are Chromebooks any good?

Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS, which is optimized for Google apps like Calendar, Gmail or Docs. If you already use these or are willing to do so, here are some of the benefits you get from a Chromebook:

  • Price: Chromebooks, apart from the Pixel, are usually economically priced.
  • Security: Chrome OS has been designed from the ground up with security in mind.
  • Software Updates: Updates for Chrome OS and your Web apps are automatically installed.
  • Chromebook sync: Enables you to share installed apps, settings, and bookmarks across different devices.
  • Boot time: The stripped down Chrome OS boots in 10 seconds and wakes up instantaneously.

Several different Chromebook models are available from manufacturers like Acer, ASUS, HP, Toshiba, and Samsung and their number is growing. Prices typically range from about $200 to $400 except for the high-end Chromebook Pixel.

If your are not convinced that a Chromebook is right for you, there are alternatives. Not too many laptops ship with Linux unfortunately, but a supported version of Windows or MacOS is better than sticking with Windows XP.
