After ASUS and Acer followed other hardware manufacturers by discontinuing the production of those tiny laptops, netbooks were declared dead here and there. While their popularity has without doubt clearly decreased since the rise of tablets, I believe they will remain a niche product.
One thing you can always count on are curious people who like to tinker with hardware and software, like Andy Kirby, who demonstrates his self-assembled mini-laptop in the video above. The components this is made of are a Rikomagic MK802 IIIS mini PC, a Motorola Lapdock, and PicUntu Linux, an Ubuntu Qantal 12.10 spin-off tailored to work with the ARM based Rockchip RK3066 CPU.
For some additional info check Andy's post on the Rikomagic forum and keep an eye on his YouTube channel.
