Last weeks episode of German tv show neues from tv station 3Sat was a special about Linux called Linux - die Reise des Pinguins. I just watched it and want to recommend it to everyone interested in Linux and open source who understands German.
The show starts with a short history about Linux, then gives some general information on open source software, and introduces some open source projects such as Ingex, which is a suite of applications for television productions, LiMux a project in Munich, Germany for migrating about 14,000 personal computers and laptops of public employees to free software, and linux4afrika, a project for collecting used computers which are donated to schools in Africa.
Moreover, the show features interview sequences with Linus Torvalds, Klaus Knopper, founder of the Knoppix project, and Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Officer at Sun Microsystems.
You can watch the show online or download the mp4 file.
One question remains shrouded in mystery. Did Linus choose a penguin as the mascot for Linux because he was once bitten by a penguin in the zoo or because penguins look like wearing tuxedos and Tux sounded like a great name?
