The HP Mini 1000 was first released in late 2008. HP Mobile Internet (MIE), the original Linux based operating system it shipped with, was dropped by HP long ago.
Thankfully, there are several Linux distros that work well on older hardware and are still maintained, Lubuntu Linux being one of them. Same as MIE, Lubuntu is based on Ubuntu making it a good candidate to run well on the Mini 1000. And it looks like the latest stable version 12.04 does so indeed in this video by Carl Blemming.
This is one of the things that set Linux apart from Windows and OSX: you can run a modern operating system on older hardware, and it works well.
