Both Ubuntu and Win XP require patience when booted from the 8 year old hard disk. Ubuntu takes 1 min 50 sec to boot and start FireFox while Win XP takes 2 min 38 sec to boot only.
This video shows how to create the bootable USB stick in Ubuntu using information from gparted and the dd command.
Finally, this video shows how to completely wipe off your Windows installation and install Ubuntu permanently on your machine.
