In this demo video Kevin Tofel of Gigaom shows how you can use Google's Chromebook Pixel with other Linux based operating systems than Chrome OS.
There are various options to do so, the one introduced here makes use of a software called crouton, which stands for Chromium OS Universal Chroot Environment and is a set of scripts that enables you to chroot into a Debian or Ubuntu based guest os. So no restart is required.
Kevin runs a demo session of Skype and mentions some other applications he installed including the OpenShot video editor and VLC media player. It's always a good thing to have different software options, especially when the installed operating systems is as limited as Chrome OS.
