Soon after the recent announcement of Samsung and Acer Chromebooks being released next month the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook was showcased at last week's final event at Google's developer conference Google I/O in San Francisco.
The folks at Engadget got their hands on the Chrome OS laptop, captured in this video. They are obviously impressed with 12.1" laptop writing that the hardware feels tremendous -- stiff, solid and well appointed, much like Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition.
The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook adheres to Google's Chrome OS laptop hardware specifications which among others means that it is equipped with a dual core processor and offers "all-day" battery life. To be more precise it is powered by a dual-core 1.66GHz Intel Atom N570 chip and the battery is said to last for 8.5 hours of active use and 5 hours of video display.
Something also pointed out in the video are the Page Back, Page Forward, Refresh, New Window, Volume, and Screen Brightness keys on the keyboard, which replace the function keys. Might make a lot of sense for a such a Web centric system.
We'll see whether this and other Chrome OS laptops coming up will sell like hotcakes or remain in stock for a long time. I presume the Samsung laptop and other Chrome OS devices will be successes and that this will help Linux based systems gaining ground. What do you think and do you consider buying a Chrome OS computer?
